Panniers for urbanites
Design is important. Panniers must be elegant but also functional. They must be easy to remove from the bike. They need to be sturdily fastened, as they'll be handled a lot. If you ride in all weathers, make sure your bike panniers are waterproof or have an integrated rain cover. On the handlebars, a bag to hold your smartphone is useful. It will help you navigate the urban jungle.
Among the solutions on offer for cyclotafers or students, you can opt for easy-to-carry tote-type panniers or one that converts into a backpack.
Cycle touring panniers
The first criterion is waterproofness. When traveling, it's essential to keep your belongings dry. Next comes volume. Large-capacity panniers (from 20 liters upwards) can be fitted to the rear of the bike, on a rack adapted to your bike. If you're going on a long bikepacking trip, you'll need to pay close attention to the weight of your load. You can opt for rackless panniers. You can also opt for large-volume saddlebags, fork bags or handlebar bags to keep your essentials close at hand.
Other types of luggage
As with motorcycling, you may want to secure your belongings in a bike top case. Rigid and lockable, it will allow you to store your belongings safely. For bulky items or shopping at the market, you can opt for an open basket. It allows you to store your bags easily.
We've also put together a list of bicycle trailers for you. It all depends on your needs.
To transport your favorite beverage or simply something to keep you hydrated, we haven't forgotten to offer you a varied selection of water bottles and bottle cages.
How to load your bike properly?
Have you chosen your panniers? Now it's time to load your bike, and here you need to keep your balance and center of gravity low, just like on a motorcycle.
With rider panniers, take care to balance the weight you put on the left and right of the pannier. Don't forget to put heavy items at the bottom of the bags. Beware, too, of blunt objects such as tools, which can puncture your beautiful panniers.
In your handlebar bag, put your papers, phone, keys, etc. They'll be easily accessible and you'll always have them in sight.
Your tent or sleeping bag can be positioned at the rear of the bike, notably in the saddlebag.
The frame bag will be the most appropriate place for utility items: inner tubes, tools, patches, first-aid kit...
