Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions to help you choose your motorcycle equipment, helmet or accessory.

  • Are motorcycle boots compulsory?

A motorcycle boot or high boot is compulsory when you take your driving test. However, the law does not require you to wear approved boots when riding on two wheels. But it's important to know that conventional, non-approved boots won't protect you at all if you fall off your bike. In fact, boots that have not been developed and approved for use on two wheels will not be resistant to abrasion or tearing, and will have no protection or reinforcement. As a result, you are constantly exposed to serious after-effects. Approved motorcycle boots are designed above all to protect you effectively.

  • Which brand of motorcycle boots to choose?

Alpinestars, Gaerne, Tcx, Falco... there are many brands in the world of motorcycle boots.

Choosing a specialist brand that only makes boots is often a guarantee of reliability. At Ixtem Moto, we prefer brands whose core business is boots. You'll find the great Italian brands: Sidi, Gaerne, TCX, Falco... Alpinestars is an exception, being both a generalist and a specialist in motorcycle boots, thanks to its history.

Most manufacturers offer several ranges to suit different profiles. However, be sure to check the size guide of the respective brand, as your size with one manufacturer may be different with another. Generally speaking, for a cross-country or enduro boot, it's best to go one size bigger than your usual size.

Which motorcycle boot should I choose?

This is an important question, as there are many different types of boots on the market. For example, a biker who only rides on the track will not have the same needs as a biker doing long trips. To help you make the right choice, we specify the corresponding boot type on our product sheets.

You need to choose a pair of boots that matches your riding style. If you ride off-road, you'll need a pair of cross or enduro boots. On the other hand, if you're going on a long-distance trip, your choice should be a waterproof model that's comfortable for the walking you'll be doing.

What type of certification is required for motorcycle boots?

Just like other protective equipment such as gloves or jackets, motorcycle boots have a level of certification to guide the consumer. There are two levels of approval for motorcycle boots: CE Level 1 and CE Level 2. The factors taken into account when awarding the rating are rigidity, abrasion resistance and cut resistance.

What are the differences between motorcycle boots?

The material (leather, microfiber, textile...) will have a different impact on contact with asphalt and/or in the event of impact. Some materials, notably leather, tend to resist abrasion and tears better than others.

Next, protection and on-board technology: the more protection a boot incorporates (heel, reinforced sole, shin...), the more protective it will be in case of need. There are even boots with highly flexible and resistant technologies, such as D3O, which provide ideal comfort.

Speaking of comfort... Comfort is an important aspect of a motorcycle boot, as it must be adapted to your morphology and use to ensure a smooth, safe ride. Elements such as the membrane, the stretch, the accordion leather and the sole should all be checked to ensure that you're riding peacefully and without discomfort.

The quality of the waterproof membrane is also important. By choosing Gore-tex, for example, you'll be assured of a waterproof motorcycle boot that's also breathable.
