What are the different types of locks?

There's a plethora of motorcycle locks on the market. With so many different brands at so many different prices, and so many different models to choose from, it's easy to get lost.

What are the different types of anti-theft devices?

The U: This is the traditional motorcycle lock. It locks the front or rear wheel. It can also be used to secure the motorcycle to a fixed point, depending on its size, but this is not its primary role.

The chain with lock: The chain with lock makes it easy to attach your 2-wheeler to a fixed point. However, it's bulkier and heavier than a simple lock. It's best for longer-term parking, at night for example. Lasse-type motorcycle chains are easier to use and take up less space.

The disc lock: This is the most compact and practical anti-theft device. On the other hand, it's the least resistant to break-in, and doesn't prevent you from lifting your scooter or motorcycle into a van, for example. There are now versions with alarms to alert you if your 2-wheeler moves. Low-cost models are best reserved for short-term stops.

What are the standards governing motorcycle locks?

In France, we have 2 types of approval.

The SRA standard, issued by insurers (an association under the law of 1901 comprising the main insurers in France). This association has drawn up very strict specifications for testing the resistance of anti-theft devices. In France, to be insured against theft, you must have at least one SRA-approved anti-theft device.

Don't forget to keep the purchase invoice for your lock. Your insurer will ask for it in the event of theft.

The other approval standard is the NF FFMC: NF for French standard and FFMC for Fédération Française des Motards en Colère. The FFMC had its own specifications for testing products. This certification was not mandatory to insure your vehicle. It disappeared a few years ago, but can still be found on many locks.

The lock is important

The locks on inexpensive locks are simple tubes that are easy to pick. At the very least, you need an anti-pick lock. Keys are more complex.

Then there are disc locks, which cannot be picked. Even on low-end locks, there are hundreds of possible combinations.

In higher-end models, anti-drill locks are also equipped with a rotating element at the lock entrance that blocks the drill bit. With Abus, the lock is mounted on a bearing that prevents drilling.

Quality brands enable you to reproduce your keys in the event of loss. The locks are usually delivered with a card bearing the key's serial number. With ABUS, you can also have a key that fits several locks. You'll find this range on our website.

A few tips to help you choose the right lock?

Don't skimp on the quality of the anti-theft device. It's a guarantee of safety. Consider using 2 locks. For the same model, thieves will always choose the bike that's easiest to steal.

The U lock is the strongest. It's the basic lock. You can add a chain to secure the bike to a fixed point, or a disc lock for short stops. Some disk locks are equipped with an alarm, which can be a deterrent.

If possible, install a chain anchor in your usual parking area.

Think about how you're going to transport your anti-theft device. The U can be attached to the motorcycle or stored under the seat, depending on the storage space available. The disc block is the easiest to transport. Do not carry your lock in a backpack. In the event of a fall, it could cause serious injury.

Finally, don't forget to maintain your lock by greasing the lock to keep it in good condition for a long time.

You can complement your mechanical motorcycle lock with a circuit-breaking alarm to act as a deterrent, or a GPS tracker to find your stolen motorcycle or scooter.
