Motorcycle airbag jacket and vest

Motorcycle airbag jacket and vest

In recent years, the motorcycle airbag vest has become an essential accessory to protect you in the event of a fall or collision. Depending on the model, it can absorb shocks to the thorax, abdomen and spine. Initially, we only had so-called wired motorcycle airbags, but we've seen the emergence of sophisticated electronic models capable of analyzing your fall and triggering themselves at the right moment. Ixon motorcycle airbags were the first to incorporate the In&Motion detection system. Today, this French technology can be found in the majority of motorcycle airbags on the market.

Texte - Les questions les plus fréquentes

  • Do I have to remove the back of my motorcycle jacket with an airbag?

The answer is yes. If you're wearing an airbag vest, it's advisable to remove the backpad from your motorcycle jacket. Your airbag vest, whether wired or electronic, has an integrated back panel. Keeping your jacket's original back protector will not improve your safety - quite the opposite, in fact, and will make you more uncomfortable.

  • How do you recharge your motorcycle airbag after triggering?

In most cases, if your motorcycle airbag is undamaged, all you need to do is replace the C02 or pyrotechnic gas cartridge, and you'll be able to reset your equipment. It's a good idea to have a replacement cartridge ready. Cartridges for wired vests are more economical than those for electronic vests.

However, with some brands, such as Alpinestars or Dainese, the airbag vest has to be sent back to Italy for rearming. This is very restrictive. This should change over the next few years.

  • Can I fly with a motorcycle airbag?

You can take your motorcycle airbag vest with you on the plane. Small gas cartridges for personal protective equipment can be carried in the cabin or in the hold (table 2.3.A of the Iata code).

You can also carry a maximum of 2 replacement gas cartridges in your baggage.

If you have an electronic airbag, it must of course be switched off. This is the case even if it's stored in your top case or the trunk of your car.

You can take the following leaflet from In&Motion with you on board, in case you run into difficulties at airport security checks.

Why wear a motorcycle airbag?

Along with a motorcycle helmet, an airbag is a life-saving accessory. It will effectively protect your vital organs. Its absorption capacity goes far beyond the conventional protection of your motorcycle jacket. The latest models can even be adapted to your riding style. The on-board algorithm can be adapted according to whether you ride on the track, on the road or off-road. Personally, I ride with the Klim airbag vest, which uses In&Motion technology. You can also choose an airbag integrated into your motorcycle jacket. The RST brand offers several models.

How does it work?

There are 3 systems:

- Wired : a cable connects the airbag to the motorcycle. In the event of a fall, the cable is tensioned, triggering a CO2 cartridge that fills the airbag in your motorcycle jacket. The 2 historic brands of wired systems are Helite and Allshot.

- The motorcycle-mounted electronics and sensors communicate with your vest. In the event of a crash, the airbag is triggered by detecting that the rider is ejected from the motorcycle. This system is disappearing as it is more restrictive. It requires specific installation on your motorcycle.

- Autonomous electronics: the detection system is built into your jacket or vest. An algorithm constantly calculates your behavior on the motorcycle via several sensors to detect whether or not you're falling.
