Why wear a motorcycle airbag?
Along with a motorcycle helmet, an airbag is a life-saving accessory. It will effectively protect your vital organs. Its absorption capacity goes far beyond the conventional protection of your motorcycle jacket. The latest models can even be adapted to your riding style. The on-board algorithm can be adapted according to whether you ride on the track, on the road or off-road. Personally, I ride with the Klim airbag vest, which uses In&Motion technology. You can also choose an airbag integrated into your motorcycle jacket. The RST brand offers several models.
How does it work?
There are 3 systems:
- Wired : a cable connects the airbag to the motorcycle. In the event of a fall, the cable is tensioned, triggering a CO2 cartridge that fills the airbag in your motorcycle jacket. The 2 historic brands of wired systems are Helite and Allshot.
- The motorcycle-mounted electronics and sensors communicate with your vest. In the event of a crash, the airbag is triggered by detecting that the rider is ejected from the motorcycle. This system is disappearing as it is more restrictive. It requires specific installation on your motorcycle.
- Autonomous electronics: the detection system is built into your jacket or vest. An algorithm constantly calculates your behavior on the motorcycle via several sensors to detect whether or not you're falling.
