It's probably the least popular motorcycle accessory. And yet! The choker is a real Swiss Army knife. In summer? It protects your nose and neck from the sun's rays. In winter? It keeps your glottis warm. And the icing on the cake? In mid-season, it turns out to be both windproof and waterproof. And with prices ranging from €10 to €30, it's without doubt the most affordable piece of motorcycling equipment. Here's our advice on how to choose the right choker for you.
Le tour de cou: a 4-season Swiss Army knife
Shoes, pants, jacket, gloves, helmet: on a motorcycle, not a single square centimeter of your skin is left uncovered. Is that so? In fact, there's still one irreducible part of your body that holds out. We're talking about the area between your helmet and the collar of your jacket. Unfortunately, this space is at the mercy of draughts. What's a choker supposed to do? Protect your neck and nape.
But that's not all ! In fact, this fabric has more than one trick up its sleeve. Different materials and technologies make it suitable for all conditions. In winter, it protects your throat from the cold, so you don't catch a cold every time you go out. In summer, it turns out to be a veritable Swiss Army knife, protecting your nose and neck from the sun's rays, as well as your precious nasal mucous membranes from dust and mosquitoes of all kinds. Finally, in mid-season, it creates a perfect connection between the collar of your motorcycle jacket and your helmet, preventing any unpleasant draughts down your neck.
Choker VS scarf VS balaclava, which to choose?
Protecting your glottis isn't the prerogative of the neckband. Its competitors? The scarf and the balaclava. However, our favorite Swiss Army knife comes out on top.
The scarf: an accessory to avoid
The scarf has one major drawback: it's particularly unsuitable for motorcycling. At speed, it floats in the wind and whips around your passenger's helmet. Would that be "unpleasant"? In fact, it's downright dangerous. Your scarf probably won't get caught in a wheel - strangling you without your consent - but the likelihood of it getting caught in a rear-view mirror, tree branch, signpost or other piece of street furniture is not zero. So you might as well not try.
What about the balaclava?
This is a matter of habit. The first few uses can give you the feeling of being compressed in your helmet because of that extra thickness of fabric. What's more, if your headgear has a bit of "play" in it, then the balaclava is likely to move around, which is unpleasant. Our selection of balaclavas :

The feeling of a wet neck: a weak point that can easily be overcome
This new piece of equipment you can't live without has just one flaw. When you wear it in front of your mouth, it collects moisture from your breath. This wet area then becomes a source of coolness when you're riding in winter. Quite the opposite of the desired effect, don't you think? Well, there's a solution: ventilation. We'll go into more detail on this point shortly.
Our selection of summer motorcycle chokers
The primary mission of a summer model? Protect your neck and nose from the sun's rays. Secondarily, to prevent that extra layer from making you sweat. So you need to opt for a product that's comfortable, lightweight, compact and ventilated. That said, you're spoilt for choice in terms of design. Here's our selection of summer chokers:

Our selection of windproof motorcycle chokers
Ideal for mid-season, the choker protects your glottis from the cool breeze of early spring or autumn. Choose a windproof model. What's next? During these outings, you're not immune to an unexpected downpour. A water-repellent choker is a wise choice. To recap? Your mid-season choker needs to be breathable, soft, windproof and water-repellent. Here's our Top 3:

Our selection of winter motorcycle chokers
A winter choker has to perform a minor miracle: it has to be warm, windproof and breathable all at the same time. It also has to be able to wick moisture away from your body, otherwise you'll end up with the opposite of the desired effect: a cold. Rest assured, modern materials make this possible.
Second constraint for winter models? Avoiding the accumulation of moisture due to breathing. For this, it's a good idea to opt for a product with ventilation at the mouth and nose. This ventilation is achieved either simply with perforations or with a breathable fabric such as Mesh.
And finally? The jacket-helmet connection must be ideal. No drafts, no drops, no snowflakes are welcome! We also aim to avoid excess fabric hems that would impede freedom of movement. For all these reasons, you need to choose a model with an ergonomic cut adapted to your morphology, ideally with a drawstring for a perfect fit.
Worried that a fleece choker won't be enough to keep you warm? If you're a big fan of the cold, models that cover the bust provide extra comfort. Here are our favorite winter chokers:

And with prices starting at just €10, why deprive yourself? On that note, we wish you a pleasant journey with your neck all wrapped up!
