Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions to help you choose your motorcycle equipment, helmet or accessory.

  • What is Koroyd or MIPS?

New materials are appearing on helmets to replace the traditional polystyrene, which absorbs the shock after it has been dispersed by the outer shell.

    Koroyd Logo

Koroyd is a honeycomb-type material. Green in color, it can be found on Klim Krios Pro helmets, for example. Properties:

    - Its honeycombs crush in a controlled manner under impact, minimizing the energy transmitted to your head.

    - It also absorbs both direct and angular shocks, reducing the risk of damage to your brain.

    - Air circulates through the honeycombs, while hot air from your head can easily escape, which is very useful when riding off-road.

    - Last but not least, the Koroyd's honeycombs are the most heavily mined in the world. The structure is 95% air. This reduces weight and improves comfort.

    mips logo

MIPS is a system that protects your brain from multidirectional shocks. The yellow Mips is located between the polystyrene of the pad and the inside of the helmet. It absorbs rotational shocks, reducing the risk of brain injury. Belland Scott have also adopted this process. The first MIPS-equipped helmet was introduced in 2007. By 2019, more than 14 million helmets had been fitted with this technology, whether for motorcycles or bicycles.

  • What does it mean if a motorcycle helmet has more than one cap?

As manufacturers move upmarket, they will multiply the number of caps. What does this mean? Basically, a low-cost helmet has a single XL cap, and then the manufacturer modulates the foam thickness to bring out sizes XS, S, M, L. That's why your wife's helmet is as big as yours. So, inevitably, the higher up the range you go, the more the helmet shell will match your face. It's not so much a question of safety as of cost: each size of skullcap has to pass homologation tests. A skullcap that's better adapted to your face also means greater comfort on long rides (reduced weight and improved aerodynamics).

  • How to choose a full-face helmet

The full-face helmet is a technical subject, full of little details , and to make sure you don't forget anything, I suggest we take a tour of a full-face motorcycle helmet together. Points to remember when choosing your helmet :

    The shell

First things first: the helmet's outer shell. Its mission is to absorb the impact of a bowl without splitting in two. There's a choice of materials: thermoplastic, polycarbonate, fiber and carbon.

To put it simply, "entry-level" helmets have a plastic cap, also known as thermoplastic. A plastic skullcap does its job of protecting the wearer in compliance with current standards. Polycarbonate helmets are also plastic-based, but offer a higher level of impact absorption than thermoplastics. The main drawback is weight. They are heavier than fiber or carbon.

Mid-range and top-of-the-range models have fiber caps. Each brand has developed its helmet shell by mixing different types of fiber. In general, a fiber helmet is designed by hand, as is the case with ARAI, for example.

Finally, there are carbon helmets. These are the lightest and strongest. The manufacturer makes the shell from a mix of fiber and carbon. The only drawback is that they can be noisier, especially in wet weather. Carbon is stiffer, so it tends to resonate more.

    Air vents

On the outside of the helmet shell, you can also see air vents and extractors (at the rear). The concept is as simple as can be: little holes in your skullcap, which then continue into channels dug in the polystyrene so that a small current of air comes to refresh you.

In the same spirit, you'll have nose-covers and bibs. Attached above and below your chin strap, they prevent icy air from rising up your cold-reddened nose in winter. For the "always on" type, they're an invaluable tool. What's more, they're often removable once spring arrives. So, when choosing a helmet, it's best to choose one with these not-so-small details.

    Closures

Almost all helmets come with "micrometric" buckles (plastic or alloy, depending on price). It's a small, notched mechanism, intuitive and easy to clip on with gloves.

On top-of-the-range helmets (or racing helmets), on the other hand, you'll have a silly "double-D" buckle, worthy of an old vintage military bag strap. That's what GP riders have. With a bit of experience, you can adjust your tightening to the nearest millimeter, and you've got an insane resistance to tearing. This was the safest system before the advent of Fidlock buckles.

The first manufacturer to integrate this type of buckle was KLIM. It's a magnetic buckle that attaches in the blink of an eye.

    The visor

Optical quality depends on the brand. In general, top-of-the-range brands offer better optical quality and less distortion. One point not to be overlooked is the risk of fogging on the screen, especially in winter. The ultimate weapon is the Pinlock. This is a small screen, a bit like double-glazing, which prevents fogging on your main screen. Fog-treated" visors are less effective, as the treatment tends to fade over time.

    Inside the helmet

The quality of the internal foam is crucial. A low-end helmet will have foams that pack down faster than a top-of-the-range helmet. Their comfort and ability to wick away perspiration should also be taken into account. And don't forget that your helmet's internal foams need to be washed regularly - it's a question of hygiene.

What you need to know about full-face helmets

A full-face helmet can be recognized by its rigid chin strap, which is inseparable from the helmet shell. A true benchmark among motorcyclists, the full-face helmet can be found both on the road and on the racetrack, where it is compulsory. At very high speeds, it's indispensable! It provides absolute protection for your head, for maximum safety. While the most resistant and protective, the full-face motorcycle helmet has one drawback. It's also the heaviest. At the top end of the market, however, full-face helmets are almost as light as modular or jet helmets. In the city, scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts will often prefer the jet helmet, which is more practical for short trips.

Full-face helmet features:

  • Chin strap integral with skullcap
  • Covers and protects the entire head
  • Fold-down visor/screen
  • Protects against cold and bad weather

Why choose a full-face helmet?

Most full-face helmets come with sun shields or visors. You can opt for a pinlock screen to protect you from fogging, or a colored screen to suit your taste. As full-face helmets are the favorite of motorcyclists, there's a wide choice of colors and designs to reflect your personality. While poor ventilation was a common complaint in the past, today's helmets are equipped with efficient, high-performance ventilation systems. So they can be worn in all seasons. There are full-face helmets to suit all budgets, from entry-level to top-of-the-range. The main difference lies in the choice of materials, notably carbon fiber, which will affect the helmet's overall weight.

The different types of shell :

  • Polycarbonate: entry-level, heavier.
  • Glass fiber, aramid: standard, lighter.
  • 100% Carbon fiber: top-of-the-range, lightest (and most expensive).

As for fasteners, there are always the usual 2 types:

  • Micrometric buckle: quick and easy
  • Double-D buckle: more effective and secure

Today's full-face helmets even feature a grooved passage for inserting eyeglass temples, for even greater comfort.

Summary

  • Maximum protection
  • The most robust
  • Optimum comfort
