The tire is an essential part of your 2-wheeler's chassis. It provides the link between your motorcycle or scooter and the ground. That's why it's essential to check not only the state of wear, but also the age of the tire. An old, unworn tire is no longer effective. Don't ride with a tire that's more than 10 years old, and if it's more than 5 years old, it's advisable to have it checked by a professional.

Here are the most frequently asked questions to help you choose your motorcycle equipment, helmet or accessory.

When should you change your motorcycle tires?
It's essential to change your tires as soon as they're worn, otherwise you'll compromise your motorcycle's performance and the safety of yourself and other road users.

Regularly checking your motorcycle tires should become a reflex. Visually, you can observe
- the general condition of the tires
- tread depth. Structured motorcycle tires have a wear indicator that lets you know where you stand.
- Abnormal tire wear: more worn on one side than the other, blistering, cracking, etc.
- An object in the tire, such as a nail.
- And, of course, tire pressure, which should be checked once a month.
When should I change my tires?

- Damaged tire casing following a puncture

- When the tire reaches the wear limit, i.e. 1mm. The indicators(small bumps between the grooves in the structure) are there to help you.

- If the tire is too old (over 5 years), it should be checked by a professional, and after 10 years, it must be replaced. The date of manufacture is indicated on the tire's sidewall. This is the DOT (Department of Transportation).

In this case, the tire was manufactured in the 42nd quarter of 2008.

- The tire is damaged or deformed. Look for abnormal wear, cuts or blisters.

- If you buy a motorcycle with tires that don't match your riding style
What are the risks of driving on worn tires?

Riding on worn tires can seriously compromise your safety. Your motorcycle tire's grip on wet roads will be reduced. A smooth tire with no tread pattern won't evacuate water. That's why, on the track, we switch to treaded rain tires when the weather turns for the worse. You'll also have problems with front braking grip. Last but not least, you can also be pulled over by the police if you drive with a tire worn beyond the wear indicator (article R314-1 of the Highway Code).
Should I change my 2 motorcycle tires at the same time?

The rear tire wears out faster than the front, as it absorbs the engine's power. The more powerful your bike, the faster the rear tire will wear, especially if you like to play with the throttle. Generally speaking, you change 2 rear tires for 1 front. So you don't have to change both tires at the same time. However, if you choose a different tire make and model, it's advisable to change them at the same time. If in doubt, don't hesitate to contact our DocBiker workshop in Pierrelaye (95) for advice.
