Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions to help you choose your motorcycle equipment, helmet or accessory.

  • How to choose a cross-country helmet for a child?

Whether your child is riding his first PW50 or a quad bike, it's essential to protect his head. As with other motorcycle helmets, you need to measure your child's head size to choose the right cross helmet. It's essential that the helmet is adapted to your child. Your child's safety depends on it. If possible, choose a helmet with a removable and washable interior, to keep the interior pleasant for your child. It's important for him to feel comfortable in his helmet, so he can concentrate on riding.

Tip: for these early stages, choose a children's cross helmet with a micrometric buckle. It will be easier for him to fasten it. If he's starting to compete, opt for a double-D buckle, which offers a higher level of support. It's essential to check that your child's helmet is securely fastened before getting on the bike.

  • How do I wash my motocross helmet?

In cross-country or enduro riding, you sweat a lot. So it's essential to clean your helmet regularly. The first method, if the inside of your helmet is removable, is to put the foams in the washing machine. Detach the inside of your helmet and put it in a washing net at 30°C. Then simply leave to air dry.

If your helmet cannot be dismantled, you can wash it in the shower with Marseille soap. Then leave to dry upside down, i.e. entrance side up. This will take longer than if you were able to remove the foams.

A third option is to use "chemical" cleaning products. The Unpass brand, for example, offers an interior and exterior maintenance kit for your helmet.

  • How to choose your motocross / enduro helmet?

Whether you're a competitor or a leisure rider, it's not always easy to choose the right helmet for your motocross or enduro bike. The multitude of brands, models and looks can confuse the most discerning among us. The most important criteria are safety and comfort.

1- What are you going to do? What discipline are you going to practice?

You're not going to spend the same amount of money on off-road recreation as you would on competition, unless of course you've got the budget. In that case, don't deprive yourself :) A leisure helmet will cost between €100 and €300. Beyond that, you're looking at a more competition-oriented cross helmet. Next, do you prefer enduro or cross-country riding? Enduro riding requires a lighter helmet. You'll be wearing your helmet all day, and your neck will thank you. In cross-country, where you'll be riding short distances, the weight is ultimately less important.

    2- Impact resistance

Cross-country riding can be very violent. That's why helmets with fiber or even carbon shells are preferred. There are also new technologies like Mips or Koroyd that reduce the force of impact and head rotation.

    3- Ventilation and maintenance

Off-road, you're always on the move. As a result, you sweat a lot under your helmet. So it's essential that your helmet ventilates properly. Choose a helmet with maximum ventilation.

It's also important that the inside of the helmet can be removed for cleaning.

    4- Size

Take your head circumference to choose your size. It's essential that the helmet fits properly, with no pressure points on the skull. If in doubt, try it on in our showroom (95) before buying online.

What you need to know about cross helmets

Whether you ride cross-country, enduro, trials, freestyle or even quad bikes, helmets are essential. But when it comes to off-road riding, having the right helmet is more than necessary. Cross helmets are therefore based on the same construction asclassic motorcycle helmets, but with modifications linked to this intense sport .

You'll find :

  • polycarbonate helmets: entry-level, very good value for money.
  • carbon fiber or composite helmets: more expensive. Top-of-the-range, stronger and lighter.

The motocross helmet is an open-face helmet, i.e., without a screen. Of course, you can add one as an option if you wish. It must be properly ventilated and very robust to withstand impacts. It also needs to be light enough to allow you to move freely and perform jumps or runs without hindrance.

Even if the choice is more limited when it comes to off-road helmets, at Ixtem we offer you numerous models from the leading cross-country brands: Airoh, HJC, Shoei, Arai, Shark...

How to choose your cross-country helmet and equipment?

First of all, you need to think about how often you ride. It's not the same investment whether you're an occasional rider or a fervent off-roader. Of course, if you're a frequent rider, we recommend quality. Once you've defined your riding style, you need to think about comfort.

Jumps, rough terrain... Off-roading is tiring, dirty and sweaty... sometimes a lot! You'll need a helmet with comfortable foam, even after many washes. Some models feature a system of detachable foams (on the sides) to make it easier to remove the helmet in an emergency.

Ventilation on the top of the helmet is also important for comfort during exercise. Even if it's open to give you the widest possible view, be sure to choose a ventilated helmet.

Summary

Your cross-country helmet should :

  • be lightweight
  • be impact-resistant
  • have washable foam
  • be properly ventilated

What about cross accessories and equipment?

For even greater comfort, you can equip your helmet with a range of cross-country accessories.

Mask

Indispensable for protecting your eyes from mud, branches and dust. In fact, cross helmets have hollowed temples to make it easier to insert a mask.

Screens

Enduro fans generally opt for a protective shield. There are many different types, depending on your needs.

  • Anti-scratch shield (branches can scratch)
  • Sunscreen (to avoid being blinded when leaving a forest or tunnel)

Chin strap

The choice is yours:

  • The quality of double-D fasteners (mandatory in competition)
  • Or the simplicity of micrometric fasteners

The cap (or cross visor)

Removable, it provides protection from the sun (can be combined with sunscreen) and from stones or other objects that might fall on the top of the head.

Decoration

It's all a question of style. At Ixtem Moto, we offer a wide range of helmet colors and decorations to personalize your helmet and give it a distinctive look.
