Motorcycle chain kit

Motorcycle chain kit

The chain kit on your motorcycle is an essential element for its smooth operation. It ensures the transfer of power from your engine to your rear wheel. Without a chain kit, there's no transmission. Your motorcycle can't move forward. So it's essential to maintain it to keep it running smoothly.

Motorcycle chain kit

What makes up a chain kit?

A motorcycle chain kit consists of 3 components:

- A gearbox output sprocket (PSB)

- A chain. On small displacements, the chain is closed with a quick-release fastener; on larger displacements, it is crimped.

- A sprocket located on the rear wheel.

What maintenance should be carried out on your motorcycle chain?

- Check chain tension regularly. Follow the instructions in your owner's manual. A chain that is too tight or too loose will cause premature wear of your chain kit.

- Clean and lubricate your chain regularly. Depending on the conditions of use, you should grease your chain every 500 to 800 km. For cleaning, remember to do it at least twice a year. Accumulated matter (a mixture of grease and dirt) will accelerate the wear of your chain kit over time.

When should I change my chain kit?

A motorcycle chain kit lasts an average of 25 to 30,000 km, depending on maintenance and riding habits. If you notice any hard spots on your chain kit, or if it becomes loose on a regular basis, it's time to change it.

Beware: a worn chain kit can become dangerous and leave you on the side of the road. So change it quickly.

How to choose your chain kit?

You can buy a complete chain kit (sprocket, chainring and chain) based on the original gear ratio. The original gear ratio corresponds to the number of teeth you have on the gearbox output sprocket and your sprocket. You can optimize your gear ratio to increase torque or top speed. On Ixtem Moto, we'll suggest the various possible gear ratios, depending on your motorcycle.

You can also opt to change one of the components in your chain kit.

There are different materials available for your sprocket, for example:

- A steel sprocket offers excellent resistance to wear, but is the heaviest.

- Made of steel, it offers greater wear resistance. Slightly heavier, it affects your bike's performance.

Aluminum crowns are lighter and particularly well-suited to smaller displacements, or for performance if you ride on the track, for example.

Finally, you can opt for an aluminum-steel crown, which offers a perfect balance between strength and lightness.
